Help with your Fears and Concerns

Dental Phobia – The Fear of the Dentist

At Knightsfield Dental Practice, we are sympathetic and caring. We are aware of how many people suffer with dental phobia. We take any concerns and fears seriously and deal with nervous patients sensitively. We deal with each person as an individual and address their own concerns carefully and are considerate of their needs.

Many people suffer from dental phobia. It affects people of all ages and backgrounds and there are many reasons why people suffer from this. It may range from previous bad experiences or fear of control or pain.

For some people their phobia is so great that they do not go to the dentist until they have severe toothache or still continue to ignore pain or the signs of swelling and abscess. This may result in severe deterioration of their dental condition and oral health.

Patients who have regular check-ups and thorough examinations enables the dentist to treat any problems that may arise at an early stage, keeping the treatment as simple and minimal as possible. Check-ups also screen for mouth cancers.

What can you do to help overcome your fear?
  • Be open about your fears with our team – let the dental receptionist know about your worries when you are thinking about booking your appointment so that the dentist will be aware of this at your first appointment.
  • Bring someone with you for your first visit. This will most likely be just a check and assessment. Take a friend or family member with you to the appointments. They can be there to give you support.
  • Discuss your worries with the dentist, Be honest and let them know about any specific concerns.
  • Ask questions about any treatments or procedures that you may be in need of.
  • Find out if there are alternative treatments available and whether treatment under sedation may be suitable.
  • Try distraction techniques, for example listening to music on an ipod.
  • Hypnosis has been used successfully in our Dental Practice for anxious patients.
